The design and architecture community has lost a valuable member this month. Renowned designer and retired principal of national architecture firm, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (BCJ), Jon Jackson passed away on August 17, 2018. As a prominent figure in both his hometown of Pittsburgh and on the international level, Jackson’s career in the field was both far-reaching and original — his work in the fields of academic spaces, laboratories and work environments has greatly helped facilitate today’s creative workplace movement.

Since his career’s onset, Jackson’s work was deeply rooted in his passion for individual and social well-being, and he strongly believed that thoughtful design could improve humanity. Throughout his career, Jackson designed for many academic institutions, including the University of Pittsburgh, Dartmouth, University of Washington, Yale, the University of California, and many more. His work for the Software Engineering Institute and the Intelligent Workplace at Carnegie Mellon University earned him AIA National Awards. Jackson’s accomplishments set the stage for his firm, BCJ, to become a leader in workplace design — which would lead to the firm’s collaborations with companies including Apple, Pixar, Adobe, and Disney.

Dick Rittelmann, friend and collaborator of Jackson and cofounder of Burt Hill Kosar Rittlemann once said, “The breadth and complexity of BCJ’s work over the years is a testimony to the skills of Jon Jackson as not only a great individual architect, but of a manager, mentor, motivator, and collaborator. Jon has matured from one who creates great architecture to one who creates the environment in which great architecture can occur.”
