Chicago Architecture Biennial Pop-up Exhibition Documents Work of SOM

“SOM: Engineering x [Art + Architecture],” a pop-up exhibition at the Mana Contemporary Chicago art center, coincides with the Chicago Architecture Biennial as it celebrates the integrated practice of engineering, art, and architecture at Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM).

Boasting an immersive display of sketches, sculpture, and video, the exhibit is distinguished by a lineup of more than 30 intricately detailed architectural models at 1:500 scale, which work in tandem to provide insight into the trajectory of the Chicago-based firm’s practice.

Moreover, the exhibit surveys SOM’s long tradition of collaboration with visual artists—including Pablo Picasso, James Turrell, Jaume Plensa, James Carpenter, Janet Echelman, and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle—as it showcases models, drawings, and ephemera.
