Designer Louis Lim and 3form Debut Interactive Furniture Installation

Brooklyn-based furniture designer Louis Lim of Makingworks has collaborated with 3form—the Salt Lake City–based manufacturer of sustainable building materials—on the Mobius, an interactive, circular bench that is activated by touch, and transforms with light. The Mobius will be on view at WantedDesign in New York, 269 11th Ave, from May 19–23.

Taking a five-week residency at 3form’s headquarters and factory, Lim experimented with their specialty machines used to cut, bend, and fabricate materials, including Dark Chroma, in order to conceive the design for the vibration-responsive bench. When the Mobius is activated, light swiftly flows through the bench.

“This material immediately mesmerized me,” says Lim. “It transmits light better than something white or translucent. Black is the absence of light, it is space and void, yet 3form’s material expresses color, light and form. I find this paradox beautiful, mysterious and magical—making it perfect for the Mobius.”
