Highlights from ICFF and WantedDesign in New York

Over the past 10 days, New York City has celebrated great design with events including the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), WantedDesign, and BKLYN Designs, and Contract editors were on-hand for all the action.

Later that evening, WantedDesign kicked off its opening night celebration at Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. It was hard to miss the giant gold pinata in the center of the courtyard, which was an art installation by artist Sebastian Errazuriz, titled “XX Century Capital” and filled with $1,000 in cash.

In addition to drinks and dancing, the party featured other exhibitions such as 100% TobeUs, a collection of 100 wooden cars created by 100 international designers, including Todd Bracher, Francois Chambard, Dror, Joe Doucet, David Weeks, Frederick McSwain, Fort Standard, Marc Thorpe and Paul Loebach. The project hopes to bring a message of sustainability and mindful use of objects to children and adults.

WantedDesign continued May 16-19 at the Terminal Stores building on 11th Avenue where dozens of exhibitors from all over the word displayed their work, in addition to a program of speakers and workshops.

Also this weekend, all of the Contract editors attended the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York, May 17-20. The 26th annual show featured contemporary furnishings and materials from more than 600 exhibitors from all over the world.

On Monday at 2 p.m., Editor in Chief John Czarnecki was joined in conversation with 2014 Designer of the Year Krista Ninivaggi, presented by ASID. Ninivaggi discussed her career and announced her new design firm, K&Co.

Managing Editor Murrye Bernard and Associate Editor Cody Calamaio also roamed the showroom floor, meeting with with exhibitors and viewing some great new products.
