United by Design: Vitra Welcomes Artek to the Family

In early September, Swiss furniture maker and design company Vitra acquired Artek, a Finnish design company. Artek was founded in 1935 by architect Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino, art promoter Maire Gullichsen, and art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl.

To help welcome Artek as a new member of the Vitra family and to celebrate Nordic design, the company held an event last Thursday, November 7, in its showroom in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. I attended along with associate editor Cody Calamaio.
