It's T minus 30 hours to departure and there's way too much to do! Tile of Spain and their partner White Good have been fabulous about doing everything they can to prepare us for this trip: sending us detailed travel itineraries with enticing descriptions about where we will be going; spelling out in splendiferous detail how to navigate from our various arrival gates in Madrid to the airport cafe from which we commence our adventure; illustratively delineating what past sojourners have worn, to guide our packing; even creating a one-page yearbook of our names and photos – the better to find each other in the airports. So I’ve only myself to blame for any lack of Eagle Scout preparedness – and I fear there is a dearth of that at the moment, as my desktop shows. (There is always too much work to do, never mind carving out time away from it!)
I will have the pleasure of staying two bonus days after the official trip to go see Barcelona; this tile-based trip will be the perfect prequel to seeing how Spain’s great architecture used tile. In particular, it will be great to experience the century-long tile thread leading from Gaudi’s Parc Guell to EMBT’s Santa Caterina Market.
Now I must clear the decks at work, and get the suitcases down from the attic tonight and pack-pack-pack. I think of what David Adjaye told me when I asked how he manages to constantly travel the world in seemingly-endless loops: he only takes three sets of clothes (using the hotel laundries often) and “goes soft” to handle the time changes. Watching the tweeting of collective mounting energies of this group of designers and writers has me excited. I hope those of us traveling from O’Hare on the tails of the blizzard fare well.
