Let's face it: when thinking of prisons, the color green isn't exactly the first shade to come to mind. But, according to an interesting article on The New York Times's green blog, it may soon be. Late last year, we wrote about Washington State Penitentiary earning LEED Silver certification for four buildings and it seems that's just the beginning. The Washington State Department of Corrections has 34 LEED-certified facilities! It seems many states are rethinking their approach to prisons, with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainable upgrades. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has 16 new green retrofitting projects on tap and Virginia, Nevada, and Indiana's Departments of Corrections have green projects on tap.
